Quality Enhancement Plan

The Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is an integral component of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) reaffirmation of accreditation process and is derived from an institution’s ongoing comprehensive planning and evaluation processes. It reflects and affirms a commitment to enhance overall institutional quality and effectiveness by focusing on an issue that the institution considers important to improving student learning outcomes and/or student success. The document submitted by the institution demonstrates that its QEP (a) has a topic identified through its ongoing, comprehensive planning and evaluation processes; (b) has broad-based support of institutional constituencies; (c) focuses on improving specific student learning outcomes and/or student success; (d) commits resources to initiate, implement and complete the QEP; and (e) includes a plan to assess achievement. The SACSCOC On-Site Reaffirmation Committee reviews the QEP and conducts interviews to determine whether the institution has demonstrated compliance with Standard 7.2. Source: SACSCOC Website.

FIU will prepare a new QEP to be submitted to SACSCOC in early 2021. FIU's last QEP was Global Learning for Global Citizenship. The purpose of the plan was to provide every FIU undergraduate with curricular and co-curricular opportunities to achieve the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of global citizenship through global learning. Each undergraduate student is required to take a minimum of two global learning courses and participate in integrated global learning co-curricular activities prior to graduation. Students take a global learning foundations course as part of their core curriculum sequence and a second global learning course in the upper division.

  • QEP topic is finalized by the FIU SACSCOC Leadership Team based on identified topics from the strategic planning process
  • QEP Director identified
  • QEP preplanning timeline and budget outlined/approved

Summer 2019

  • QEP committee established
  • QEP staff hired

Fall 2019

  • QEP feasibility study planned to determine viability of implementation 
  • QEP student learning outcomes and assessment methods approved by Faculty Senate and FIU SACSCOC Leadership Team

Spring 2020


  • QEP reviewed and approved by Faculty Senate
  • QEP feasibility study conducted

Summer 2020

  • QEP feasibility study data analyzed to determine viability of implementation

Fall 2020


  • QEP finalized and approved by FIU SACSCOC Leadership Team
  • Lead QEP evaluator nomination submitted to the SACSCOC

Spring 2021


  • QEP submitted to the SACSCOC
  • QEP presented at SACSCOC On-Site Visit (March 16-18)
  • QEP refined for full implementation
